"Whether they admit it openly or in secret to themselves, many men, perhaps most men in our society have a deep wish to understand what it really means to be a man. This does not mean that they are not men, but that they lack a satisfactory explanation of exactly who it is they are supposed to be. Men don't study themselves from this point of view; they accept social norms and standards, and simply 'carry on regardless'."
- Dan Racicot, Director, Mountaintop Enterprises

Northern Ontario Men's Conference

WHY A MEN'S CONFERENCE?
WHAT'S THIS ABOUT MEN'S STUDIES?

THE N.O.R.M. CONFERENCE
  • introduces men to men's issues,
  • provides a forum for sharing experience with other men,
  • raises the central question:
"What does it mean to be a man?"

    IT IS FOR MEN WHO
  • are new to the concept of men's studies,
  • feel a need to learn more in this area,
  • wish to make contact with other men who are
already pursuing goals in this area.

This conference is also for men who have some experience with men's groups, and who wish to participate in the growth of this field in Northern Ontario. As well, male counsellors and volunteers who work with men will find valuable direction, and their awareness of men's needs will be greatly enhanced.

    This is an alcohol-free event.

    CONFERENCE THEMES
Speakers have agreed to speak spontaneously of their experience with the chosen topics, not from prepared academic papers. Their time has also been limited so that panelists and other contributors will have a chance to present their viewpoints and experience. Time is also allotted for questions from the audience, either anonymously, or in person. Experience shows that men respond most positively by hearing other men 'open up', and this is what this conference is about: opening up to the themes outlined here.

    SPEAKERS
"NO PREPARED SPEECHES" might be the motto of this conference. Every effort is being made to ensure that discussion is lively, spontaneous, and engaging. Effort is also being made not to single out individuals for their academic or professional accomplishments; rather, the focus is on their real experience with the issues in question. They are listed in alphabetical order, not in order of importance.

    SPEAKERS TO BE ANNOUNCED

Panel and Forum speakers will total 12. If you are interested in being a speaker, contact the Director, Dan Racicot at admin@mountaintop.ca or call 705-524-1928.
