MEN'S STUDIES CENTER
The MEN'S STUDIES CENTER is based on the idea of re-educating men in terms of their masculine identity. True, many men are secure in their masculinity, and would find this kind of subject laughable, but experience shows that even those men who feel secure, have deep-seated questions that they would dearly love to explore if only they could feel comfortable about being with other men doing the same thing.
The SELF-DISCOVERY Support Group (formerly MAN to MAN Support Group) founded in 2002 at the Pastoral Institute of Northern Ontario as part of a visionary Men's Resource Centre, continued its growth under a new organization (Mountaintop Enterprises) when the Pastoral Institute closed in 2003. Now in transition, this group remains as the core around which other men's groups are developing.
UP-FRONT "FINE PRINT"
Except where indicated, none of the groups or services listed below is offered as professional therapy or counselling. Group work does have 'therapeutic value,' but The MEN'S STUDIES CENTER is an educational facility, not a social work agency.
2. SEXUAL ORIENTATION ISSUES
The MEN'S STUDIES CENTER operates on a general principle of non-discrimination and is open to the needs of all men everywhere. This applies to race, ethnic background, religious affiliation, social status, and any other factor of up-bringing, education, and conditioning that a man brings with him when he begins work with a group. The most often asked question, however, has to do with sexual orientation. MOUNTAINTOP ENTERPRISES espouses no particular social or religious position on this matter. ALL GROUPS in The MEN'S STUDIES CENTER operate on the premise that sexual orientation is NOT a determining factor of masculine identity, and that the segregation of men according to their sexual preference is not a useful or meaningful practice. Sexual orientation is a discussible topic, and is given due attention in MOUNTAINTOP's programs, but there are no groups devoted exclusively to gay issues, and MOUNTAINTOP is not a 'gay organization.' One thing is certain: men in today's society know far less about sex and sexuality than they imagine, believe, or claim they do, and there is a great need for education in this area. Prospective participants who have a problem with this policy and outlook are encouraged to challenge their own prejudices. In three years of operation, the SELF-DISCOVERY Support Group has a proven record of successful work and beneficial results for both gays and straights who work together on self-discovery issues in the same forum.

The MEN'S STUDIES CENTER is not not-for-profit, but it operates at a level below cost in order to provide men with services that are not available elsewhere. All fees are used to cover basic costs such as rent and administrative services. Surplus revenues, if or when they accrue, are used directly to cover publishing costs of CHALLENGE: A Journal of Male Perspectives.
Participation fees encourage men to commit to the programs they say they value. Mountaintop's fees are loosely based on the ability of men to pay, and do not exceed the cost of some of some of their 'normal' habits such as coffee and smoking.
For men who wish to participate in more than one group, registration fees are not duplicated, and participation fees are reduced.
Participation in any two groups: $20/month
Participation in any three groups: $25/month
MOUNTAINTOP needs men who are willing and able to assist in the delivery of all these programs. If you can help, contact the Director. Remuneration is in the form of reduced or waived participation fees.
